Us! Our
camellia society meets once a month in Gulfport from August to March,
hold a camellia show & plant sale in November, and a grafting workshop
in February. (details below)
In addition to information about our society, this website contains over a hundred pages of information on camellia selection, culture and history. Camellia selection topics include: checklists, locally introduced camellias, antique camellias, cold hardy camellias, fragrant camellias, and camellias with very large and miniature blooms. There are also links to over 500 camellia photographs and lists of public camellia gardens. Cultural advice includes planting, fertilizing, disease, grafting, air layering, cuttings and a camellia care calendar. |

Meetings are an excellent place to learn about horticulture and meet like-minded people. Our camellia society membership is primarily drawn from the towns of Ocean Springs, Biloxi, Gulfport, Long Beach, Pass Christian, Diamondhead, Kiln, Bay St. Louis and Waveland and from the counties of Jackson, Stone, Harrison and Hancock. |
Meetings
& Outings Meetings are from August to March Ordinarily on the third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. See Calendar Join Us! We meet monthly from August to March at the First United Methodist Church on 15th Street in downtown Gulfport (see right sidebar). Please call (228) 863 2405 to confirm meeting time & location. A typical meeting includes planning for upcoming activities (such as the camellia show, or a member outing) and a short program on camellias geared to the novice. During the bloom season members often bring in flowers from their garden and compare gardening notes. Member outings have included trips
to various camellia shows, camellia gardens, and specialty nurseries. We
also typically participate in the Gulf
Coast Garden and Patio Show held in Gulfport or Biloxi in late
February or early March. |

Camellia
Grafting Workshop A Sat. Afternoon in February Saturday 2-5 p.m. Orange Grove Lyman Community Center |
Orange Grove/ Lyman
|
Grafting
camellias |
The primary purpose of the workshop is to teach people about camellia culture and care and how to graft. Waxing camellias blooms is also demonstrated. The workshop is
also an opportunity to obtain freshly grafted camellias of
varieties not readily available through local sources. The workshop is
held on a Saturday afternoon in mid to late February and is a great way
to build up a camellia garden. |

Annual
Camellia Show & Plant Sale Nov.2006 Saturday 2-5 p.m. | Sunday 12-4 p.m. Orange Grove Lyman Community Center The highlight of the show is table upon table of blooms -- as many as a thousand on display and a remarkable feat for this time of year. Also highly popular is the sale of hard-to-find camellias on grafted understock. (Grafted camellias have all but disappeared from the nursery trade, but they are often the only way to obtain prized show-winning varieties.) Other activities at the show include demonstrations on preserving camellia blooms for flower arrangements by waxing; a plant raffle; talks on camellia care; and presentation of a camellia of the year. This show is held in cooperation with the
American Camellia Society and is usually held on the Saturday
& Sunday before Thanksgiving. Special thanks to these camellia exhibitors
and judges for attending our 2004 show. Should you be interested
in entering a bloom at the show please see the show
rules. |
Our show falls on the weekend before Thanksgiving & is over for this season. Following our show these nearby towns have their own shows: Slidell,
New Orleans, Mobile, Baton Rouge, and |
